SIRI and smart manufacturing: a practical guide for Malaysian SMEs

What the Smart Industry Readiness Index (SIRI) means for Malaysian manufacturing SMEs, and how to make practical, affordable progress on Industry 4.0.

The Smart Industry Readiness Index (SIRI) is a framework for measuring how far a manufacturer has progressed towards Industry 4.0. It is widely used in Malaysia to assess factories and plan improvement. For many SMEs, though, it can feel abstract. This guide explains it in practical terms.

The three building blocks

SIRI looks at a factory through three building blocks:

  • Process: operations, supply chain and product lifecycle.
  • Technology: automation, connectivity and intelligence.
  • Organisation: talent readiness, structure and management.

Each area is scored on bands, so you can see where you are strong and where the gaps are.

The common SME gap

In most SMEs we visit, the pattern is similar:

  • Process: no live view of losses. Problems are found at month-end.
  • Technology: data exists but is disconnected, spread across machines, paper and spreadsheets.
  • Organisation: know-how sits in a few experienced people's heads.

You don't need to automate everything

A common misconception is that Industry 4.0 means robots and expensive sensors everywhere. In practice, the fastest gains usually come from Intelligence and Operations: using the data you already have to make better decisions every day. That needs software, not new machines.

A practical roadmap

  1. Assess: a short SIRI-aligned review of your lines, losses and data.
  2. Connect: bring existing records into one system, using Excel uploads or APIs.
  3. Decide: use analytics and AI to rank improvement actions by RM value.
  4. Train: capture expert know-how as playbooks and build skills across the team.
  5. Scale: once one line shows results, extend to the rest of the plant.

How RiseHill can help

DMIS addresses six SIRI pillars, including Operations, Supply Chain, Intelligence and Talent Readiness, and was developed with support from MDEC's Malaysia Digital Scale-Up Grant. Our digital transformation team can help you assess where you stand and plan the next step.
